Today, Transit Windsor provides safe, reliable, and affordable public transportation for Windsor and surrounding municipalities, supporting everyday trips to work, school, services, and community destinations.

A Legacy of Moving Windsor-Essex
Public transit in Windsor-Essex dates back to 1874, when the Sandwich and Windsor Passenger Railway Company first began operating streetcars. Over the decades, the system expanded into one of Canada’s most extensive interurban networks, connecting Windsor to Tecumseh, Amherstburg, Essex, Kingsville, and Leamington.
Operating under the name Sandwich, Windsor & Amherstburg Railway (SW&A), the system transitioned from horse-drawn cars to steam, then to electric streetcars, and ultimately to buses by 1939, reflecting changing technology and travel needs.
In 1977, the service officially became Transit Windsor, marking the beginning of a modern era focused on bus-based public transportation.
Remnants of this history remain visible today. From preserved streetcar rails embedded in city streets to the restoration of Streetcar No. 351, now on display along Windsor’s riverfront as a reminder of the city’s transit heritage.
