Parks Development and Open Houses

The Parks Development Division is responsible for the design and development of all parks within the City of Windsor. Chapter four of the Parks and Recreation Outdoor Master Plan describes in detail the park classifications shown below:

Neighbourhood Open Spaces

Under City Parks' Control:

  • Neighbourhood parks
  • Parkettes

Outside of City Parks' Control:

  • Private recreational open spaces

Community Open Spaces

Under City Parks' Control:

  • Community parks
  • Community sports and recreational facilities

Outside of City Parks' Control:

  • School boards recreational facilities
  • Churches

Regional Open Spaces

Under City Parks' Control:

  • Regional parks
  • Regional athletic complexes
  • Riverfront parks
  • City Marina

Outside of City Parks' Control:

  • University and colleges
  • Herb Gray Parkway
  • Hospitals

Natural Open Spaces

Under City Parks' Control:

Outside of City Parks' Control:

  • Essex Region Conservation Authority (ERCA) and Provincial Conservation Areas

Recreationways

Under City Parks' Control:

  • Greenways and corridors
  • Community trails

Outside of City Parks' Control:

  • Bike lanes (Bicycle Use Master Plan)


Community/regional parks are designed for the recreation and leisure activities of all Windsor residents and/or the broader regional population. Neighbourhood parks are designed for the recreation and leisure activities of residents within a defined service radius of the neighbourhood.

The city is also comprised of a number of natural open spaces such as Ojibway and Spring Garden, and there are many recreationways that link the city together with a series of trail networks.

The Parks Development Division strives to create parks within the community that offer a wide variety of leisure and recreational services while providing the citizens of Windsor with both passive and active spaces that foster a sense of community and positive wellbeing.
