Homelessness In Windsor Essex County

The homeless population in Windsor and Essex County is made up of men, women, youth and children. Homelessness can occur due to a number of factors such as abuse, loss of employment, unmanageable living expenses, mental health or addiction problems.

In addition to individuals that find themselves homeless and having to access Emergency Shelter services, there are the hidden homeless. These individuals have found themselves homeless as well but are "couch surfing" (i.e., staying with friends or family, often in very overcrowded conditions).

Hundreds of other individuals are at risk of becoming homeless, including those in households that pay 50 percent or more of their income for rent, as well as those living in unsafe rental units.

What is being done in Windsor and Essex County?

The City of Windsor has worked to meet the needs of individuals who are homeless or at risk of homelessness through a variety of residential and non-residential programs.

In addition to Emergency Shelters and Housing with Supports, the projects listed along with this page have also been established to support individuals that find themselves homeless or at risk of homelessness. These programs operate by means of provincial funding. Follow the links in the menu to learn more.

The City of Windsor has used federal funding to create additional transitional housing units and support services for individuals that are homeless or at-risk of homelessness.

The City of Windsor continues to focus on building the community's capacity to better meet the needs of individuals experiencing homelessness, and ensure that the number of individuals experiencing homelessness is reduced.
