An Evening With Professor Michael Farrell
Wednesday, May 22, 2019. $50.00 Per Person. Doors Open at 6:30 p.m.
The Willistead Manor Inc. Board of Directors presents "An Evening With Professor Michael Farrell" at Willistead Manor. Doors Open at 6:30 p.m. Professor Farrell's lecture begins at 7:00 p.m. in the Saltmarche Gallery on the second floor. Coffee, tea and desserts will follow in the manor. Call 519-253-2365 to purchase by phone or visit Willistead Manor during business hours.
Professor Farrell's lecture will cover the art and life of Gari Melchers. Melchers was the son of German-born, Detroit-based sculptor Julius Melchers. He first studied with his father, along with another student, Albert Kahn. The younger Melcher's talent was recognized and encouraged, and he traveled to Germany to further his studies. At the beginning of the twentieth century, three American artists shared equal fame: James Abbott McNeil Whistler, John Singer Sargent and Gari Melchers. Melchers' renown brought him back to Detroit where he had mural commissions and painted many important members of society ... including the Walkers. This illustrated lecture will examine Melchers' career, his art and in particular, the place of Willistead Manor's two portraits by this outstanding painter.

Yoga at the Manor
After a successful launch in 2017, Yoga at the Manor is back in 2019 with classes offered in the spring, fall and winter. We also offer a short, four-class session in the summer.
Yoga at the Manor. In this all-levels Yoga class, you will learn the discipline of relaxation and meditation. Concentrate on breathing and yoga positions, and improve your flexibility and agility.
Gentle Yoga/Healthy Backs at the Manor. The hardest part of yoga practice can be quieting the mind to listen to the body. Relax deeply; let go of unhealthy performance-based habits which contribute to imbalance and injury. This restorative approach to yoga builds healthier backs and helps improve concentration.
Both Yoga offerings at Willistead Manor are led by Deanna Gagnon and will take place inside the main manor house. Depending on the weather, some classes may take place in the beautiful Paul Martin Gardens just outside the building. This is a unique opportunity to be active and healthy in the unforgettable setting of Willistead Manor.
