How do I update my school board support?

As of January 1, 2024, Elections Ontario assumed responsibility for the voters' list, while the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) continues to collect school support information.

All properties in Ontario are assigned a school support designation, even if you do not have children or they are not currently attending school. If no selection is made, the designation defaults to the English public school board. Your current support is shown on your property assessment notice.

You can review or update your school support designation using MPAC’s online tool. To be reflected on the voters' list for the 2026 municipal and school board election, updates should be completed by June 1, 2026. For more information or to make a change to your school board support, please visit School Support Designation — Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC).

Students residing in another municipality for school:

As outlined in the Municipal Elections Act, a person may have residences and vote in two local municipalities at the same time, in the same election, if:

  1. The person lives in one of the local municipalities in order to attend an educational institution, but not with the intention of changing their permanent lodging place; and
  2. The person’s permanent lodging place is in the other local municipality, 2009, c.33, Sched. 21, s.8 (3).

How to vote:

For eligible voters, voting on Election Day or on an advance vote day will be easy, and results will arrive quickly after the close of polls on Voting Day. Here is how it works:

Identification Required: Identification will be required at the voting station to verify your identity and qualifying address. To see what constitutes valid identification, see Identification Rules for Voting.

  1. When you arrive at the voting station, you will receive your paper ballot in a privacy folder from the Deputy Returning Officer according to your school support (showing on the voters’ list) and be directed to a voting booth to mark your ballot.
  2. Use the marking pen at the voting booth to fill in the oval next to the candidate(s) of your choice for each office listed on the ballot.
  3. Once you are done voting, place the ballot back in the privacy folder supplied to you with the Deputy Returning Officers’ initials showing, and bring it to the Tabulating Officer who will insert the ballot into the vote tabulator to record your vote. Once read, the vote tabulator will place the ballot into the ballot box.

Note: If the voting station is closing, you will be allowed to complete your vote if you are in line at the voting place prior to 8:00 p.m.
