Accessible Service
Regular Transit Windsor fares apply to wheelchair passengers. Companions or assistants are also obliged to pay the regular applicable fare.
Note: Fully accessible buses are not intended to replace Handi-Transit service.
Customer Responsibilities
- Wheelchair passengers must have the ability to board, manoeuvre and alight independently, safely and quickly.
- If assistance is required, the wheelchair passenger must be accompanied by a companion to assume these responsibilities.
- Please be patient, as it may take a few extra moments for some customers to enter and exit the bus.
General Guidelines
- Fully accessible buses provide access to public transportation for persons in wheelchairs (manual and electric), wheeled walkers, powered scooters, walker and canes, or customers who are able to walk unassisted but still have difficulty using stairs.
- This equipment gives citizens with mobility challenges the freedom to enjoy regularly scheduled public transportation services.
- Buses can accommodate two (2) wheelchairs. One space is avilable immediately behind the driver, and the other is on the curb side directly accross the aisle.
- Seats must be raised to accommodte the wheelchair. If customers are sitting in these seats the driver will politely ask them to move to accommodate the wheelchair passenger.
- When both wheelchair spaces are occupied with customers in wheelchairs, or if the bus is full to standing, the drive cannot board another wheelchair and oncoming passengers will have to wait for the next fully accessible bus.
Getting On and Off The Bus
- The ramp is deployed only when boarding a wheelchair or scooter. The driver will lower the bus upon request for customer using walkers and canes.
- All wheelchair access must be done at the front door.
- Customers in chairs and scooters will be picked up and dropped off at regular bus stops. Special request stops will be accommodated at the discretion of the driver, using the same criteria that applies to all other passengers, and provided the ramp can be deployed to a suitable on-street surface.
Restraints
- The driver will assist the passenger in securing the chair to the floor brackets to the fullest extent possible.
- Passengers are required to apply brakes, and use any restraints (belts, etc.) equipped on their mobility device.
Scooter Policies
- Scooters are allowed on the bus, provided there is enough room.
- Scooter passengers are not permitted to sit on the device while it is being transported inside the bus, according to manufacturer's instructions.
- The scooter must be secured to prevent it from tipping over.
- The bus is not allowed to move until the scooter is secured and the passenger is sitting on a bus seat.
- Failure to comply with these requirments will result in the passenger not being able to ride.
Wheelchair Policies
- Drivers are required to assist a wheelchair passenger by raising the seat at the designated wheelchair spot.
- Passengers are required to apply brakes.
- The driver must secure the chair to the floor brackets to the fullest extent possible before moving the bus.
- Chairs should be clamped and secured at three (3) points, one (1) at the back and two (2) in the front. If a malfunction occurs on a belt or hook, two points are sufficient.
- The driver must secure the lap belt for passengers under 16 years of age, if they are unable to fasten on their own, before moving the bus. Passengers over the age of 16 who are unable to fasten their own belt and do not allow the driver to secure the lap belt are travelling at their own risk and responsibility.
Bicylce Policy
- Bicycles are not allowed on City Service buses, they must be mounted on the front bike rack.
Priority Seating
Priority seating is for the use of passengers with a disability. These seats are located close to the front of the vehicle. Passengers are expected to respect and obey the purpose of the designated seating area, meaning that if you are sitting in one of these designated seats, you must vacate the seat for a passenger with a disability.
Please note:
- A person with a disability occupying a priority seat is not required to move for another customer with a disability. Use of these seats is on a first-come, first-served basis.
- You are not required or expected to leave a transit vehicle in order to make room for a customer with a disability.
- Bus drivers will not intervene to enforce the requirement. We ask, however, that you show consideration for those whose need is greater than your own.
Service Animals
A working animal is allowed on board under the following circumstances:
- A harness or vest is in use.
- A letter is available from a physician or nurse verifying that the animal is required for reasons relating to the disability.
- Note: Documentation must be presented if requested by the driver.
