2023 Community Safety and Well-Being Events
De-Escalating Potentially Violent Situations Workshop
On November 17 and June 20, 2023, the Crisis & Trauma Training Resource Institute facilitated workshops to teach local service providers how to de-escalate potentially violent situations through assertiveness and interpersonal communication. These events were sponsored by Substance Supports in Neighbourhoods Accessed through Police Partnerships (SSNAPP), a partnership between the Windsor Police Service (WPS), the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit (WECHU), and the City of Windsor.
SSNAPP aligns with the Windsor Essex Regional Community Safety and Well-Being Plan (the Plan) and supports ongoing efforts to address the far-reaching effects of the opioid and other substance crises across Windsor and Amherstburg. More specifically, SSNAPP aligns with Priority #3 of the Plan, “Mental Health & Substance-Use Supports.”
Building Safer Communities Fund Announcement
On November 16, 2023, Irek Kusmierczyk, Member of Parliament for Windsor-Tecumseh and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Employment, Social Development and Official Languages, announced that Public Safety Canada is investing more than $2.7 million to prevent youth gun crime and gang violence in Windsor through the Building Safer Communities Fund (BSCF). The BSCF aligns with Priority #2 of the Plan, “Engaged & Safe Communities.”
Two-Day Crime Prevention through Environmental Design Training Course
From November 15 to 16, 2023, the Plan sponsored a two-day training course to share the concepts and principles of Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED). This workshop was facilitated by Barry Horrobin, Director of Planning and Physical Resources at WPS, and taught participants how to evaluate physical places and implement proven CPTED strategies to contribute to safer communities. CPTED training courses align with Priority #2 of the Plan, “Engaged & Safe Communities.”
Windsor Safety and Crime Prevention Walk
On November 2, 2023, also in alignment with Priority #2 of the Plan, “Engaged & Safe Communities,” the City of Windsor and Windsor Police Service partnered for a safety and crime prevention walk. Starting at Mitchell Park, residents were guided by Barry Horrobin, Director of Planning and Physical Resources at WPS, on a round-trip walk and learned how to prevent opportunities for crime, change the way they see and walk through their neighbourhood, and learn personal safety tips along the way.
Festival of Guest Nations & Public Safety Information Day
On September 17, 2023, City of Windsor representatives attended the Festival of Guest Nations & Public Safety Information Day in Leamington to promote and spread awareness of the Plan while promoting Priority #2, “Engaged & Safe Communities.”
Downtown Windsor Community Collaborative Potluck Events
Throughout the summer of 2023, the Downtown Windsor Community Collaborative (DWCC) hosted community engagement events at Bruce Park, Mitchell Park, Wigle Park, and Glengarry Complex to bring residents and local service providers together in the downtown core. These events were also sponsored by SSNAPP, a partnership between WPS, WECHU, and the City.
As stated previously, SSNAPP aligns with Priority #3 of the Plan, “Mental Health & Substance-Use Supports.” However, these community engagement events align with Priority #2 of the Plan, “Engaged & Safe Communities.”
CPTED Training Workshop & Introduction of the SSNAPP Program
On March 24, 2023, SSNAPP hosted a Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED) workshop, followed by an introduction and discussion of the SSNAPP initiative. Service providers learned about the basics of CPTED from Barry Horrobin, Director of Planning and Physical Resources at Windsor Police Service. Service providers also learned about SSNAPP and its alignment with Priority #3 of the Plan, “Mental Health & Substance-Use Supports,” and were able to contribute to a roundtable discussion on the initiative.
