National Urban Park – Ojibway Prairie Complex

In August 2021, Parks Canada launched a new program to support the creation of a network of national urban parks. National urban parks will contribute to conservation goals, provide access to nature for major population centres, and contribute to reconciliation with Indigenous peoples.

Parks Canada and the City of Windsor have signed a statement of collaboration indicating their intent to work together for the public good by conducting a dialogue around the feasibility of the potential designation of a national urban park at the Ojibway Prairie Complex, and potentially other surrounding nature areas. This opportunity builds on the work of the City of Windsor and local advocates in advancing the vision for this site.

This project is currently in the pre-feasibility assessment phase, which is an early exploratory phase of work and the first step of a multi-phase, multi-year roadmap that leads towards obtaining National Urban Park designation. Opportunities will be provided for stakeholders and other interested groups to meaningfully contribute to discussions about Ojibway Prairie Complex and the National Urban Parks program.
