City Announces New Bikeway Features on Victoria Avenue
The City of Windsor is excited to announce significant upgrades to Victoria Avenue as part of the ongoing Victoria Bikeway Project. These improvements aim to enhance safety and accessibility for cyclists and drivers alike, fostering a more sustainable and cyclist-friendly community.
Some of these new features include:
- Buffered Bike Lanes: A wide painted buffered bike lane has been added to the right-hand side of the roadway, complete with a painted buffer on both sides for additional cyclist safety.
- Green Markings at Intersections: Bike lanes may be painted green at intersections to highlight their presence and improve visibility.
- Conflict Zone Markings: Areas where vehicles may need to cross bike lanes, such as turn lanes or parking access points, are marked with dashed lines. Drivers must yield to cyclists in these zones.
- Shared Travel Lanes: The bikeway transitions to a shared travel lane for both cyclists and vehicles, marked with sharrow pavement symbols.
- Traffic Calming Measures: Speed humps have been added to encourage safer driving speeds.
Guidelines for all road users:
- Drivers must provide at least one metre of clearance when passing cyclists.
- Residents should adhere to the new parking signage, which is now fully installed.
- Parking or stopping on bike lanes is strictly prohibited.
All residents and commuters are encouraged to practise patience and vigilance as everyone adapts to the updated roadway features. While this learning curve is in place, parking violators will receive warnings however tickets will be issued to enforce compliance starting in 2025.
The Victoria Bikeway Project is a vital step toward a safer, more connected, and more environmentally friendly transportation network.
