March 2020 | Lots to Explore & Experience

This month brings many opportunities to get involved, have some fun, explore the past and experience unforgettable entertainment in your community.

I will be presenting the Windsor Mayor’s Arts Awards again in 2020 alongside the Windsor Endowment for the Arts (WEA) awards and grants. Our three awards of merit (presented to an individual artist, arts organization and volunteer) celebrate the individuals and organizations that support locally developed arts – providing exciting, surprising and meaningful opportunities to strengthen our creative community. The deadline to apply is March 31, 2020. All details, including the application are available at citywindsor.ca.

There are several exciting full-size and mini exhibitions on display at Museum Windsor’s Chimczuk Museum, including Bustles & Bows: Women’s Fashion from the Victorian Era to the 1920s, Navigating Our Way – Maps of Windsor and Essex County, Snapshots of Windsor-Essex-Kent Beauties: 1950s & 1960s, Red Light Green Light, and Walking in a Windsor Wonderland. This month, the museum also offers special P.D. Day programming March 13 and 27, and March Break activities from March 14 to 22. For a full schedule of events, exhibitions and more, visit museumwindsor.ca.

Families looking for March Break fun can find it all across our community. Our week-long March Break Camps are jam-packed with games, crafts, sports, field trips and fun. Camps take place from March 16 to 20 at several of our community centres: Capri Pizzeria Recreation Complex, Adie Knox Herman Recreation Complex, Gino & Liz Marcus Community Centre, WFCU Centre and Atkinson Memorial Centre. For information, or to register, visit activewindsor.ca or call 311.

Additionally, Adventure Bay Family Water Park presented by WFCU Credit Union offers March Break Memberships at special price points from March 14 to 22, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. For full details on the options, visit adventurebay.ca.

On March 17, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Roseland Golf & Curling Club presents a free Learn to Curl Clinic. No experience is necessary, and all equipment is provided at this event, which is a favourite for attendees.

Over at wfcu-centre.com, you can find information or purchase tickets to season games for the Windsor Spitfires, and the Harlem Globetrotters World Tour that comes to the centre next month. This all-new "Pushing the Limits" World Tour features new thrills, high-flying dunks and unforgettable family moments. The Original Harlem Globetrotters are a worldwide icon, synonymous with one-of-a-kind family entertainment and great basketball skills. Founded in 1926, the Globetrotters represent 94 years of breaking down barriers, acts of kindness and commitment to fans that goes well beyond the game. It will be fantastic to have them with us at our state-of-the-art WFCU Centre.

After a memorable Valentine’s Day Experience, Willistead Manor’s At the Manor series picks up again in April with an Easter Sunday Brunch Buffet. Information on this event and all others in the 2020 At the Manor Series is available at willistead.ca. Tickets can be purchased online at thymetogo.ca or by calling 519-254-3434.

As winter continues, I’m encouraging residents to sign up to be a Snow Angel. This voluntary snow removal service for senior citizens and persons with physical disabilities attempts to match volunteers with residents requiring assistance in their neighbourhoods. It’s a great way to get fit and make a difference. Call 311 or email 311@citywindsor.ca.

Calling all 2020 Windsor Centenarians! Our Centenarians are part of a generation that helped define our community and are living links to the rich and varied history of our city. To help capture and share their stories, I’m asking residents to step forward if you or a loved one is celebrating the milestone of 100 years or greater in 2020. You have stories to tell. Please get in touch with my office at mayoro@citywindsor.ca. I’m looking forward to the opportunity to visit with some of these incredible people throughout this year to thank them for being part of Windsor’s story.

To learn more about the events and activities coming to Windsor-Essex this March, see citywindsor.ca, activewindsor.ca, snapdwindsor.com and our Winter-Spring 2019/2020 Activity Guide (available online and in print).
