Message From Mayor Drew Dilkens

Happy 125th, Windsor! Happy 150th, Ontario and Canada!

What an exciting year this will be for the City of Windsor.

Our community has so very much to celebrate this year. Windsor marks our milestone 125th Birthday, while Canada celebrates 150 years as a nation, and Ontario commemorates its role as a founding province in Canada's Sesquicentennial.

I am proud of the Celebrating2017 initiative. This year-long project and this accompanying website will capture, highlight and share information on the many opportunities we all have to make Windsor the place to be in 2017.

You will hear much more about this exciting initiative as the year progresses, with events being added to the calendar all year long. I am excited by our City-led signature events that include our 125th Birthday Party; partnering with the Windsor Spitfires to host the 2017 MasterCard Memorial Cup; Canada Day celebrations; Military commemorations; continuing expansions of our educational institutions to our downtown; our Poet Laureate project, "A Group of Seven"; and Museum Windsor's "Windsor 1867 & 1967 - A Sesquicentennial Exhibit".

A Great Canadian Flag will fly high, Adventure Bay turns three, the Chimczuk Museum turns one, and the Canada 150th Anniversary Gardens - showcasing the Canada 150 red and white tulip - will bloom. All the while, work continues on bronze sculptures of Chief Tecumseh, General Brock, and Hiram Walker.

We will also celebrate with community events all across the city, organized and led by the individuals and organizations that are regularly involved in making our community a diverse and exciting place to live and visit. Invite your friends and family from far and wide to join in the festivities.

The City of Windsor is the fourth most diverse city in Canada. Our community is proud of this designation. Together, we celebrate our diversity and give thanks that we live in a country that welcomes immigrants from all around the world. It is a privilege and an honour to be the Mayor of a City that is home to residents from over 100 heritages.

Celebrating2017 is about reflecting on our stories, and on all that we have accomplished as a community of Windsorites, Ontarians and Canadians in the last 150 years. Celebrating2017 is about looking forward to an exciting, prosperous future filled with possibilities.

I encourage everyone to be a part of the celebrations in any way you can.

Drew Dilkens
