Outdoor Skating Returns to Charles Clark Square and Lanspeary with COVID-19 Precautions

As announced earlier this week, the City of Windsor is moving forward with careful re-opening of outdoor skating rinks, as Windsor-Essex has now entered the “Red-Control” zone of the Province of Ontario’s COVID-19 response framework.

The outdoor Lanspeary Lions Rink opened on Wednesday, February 17, and now Charles Clark Square’s ice rink is scheduled to open on Monday, February 22, 2021, weather permitting.

The City is taking additional precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19 by allowing for a maximum of only 10 skaters per session. In keeping with current provincial regulatory requirements, free public skating will be available by advance reservation only at ActiveWindsor.ca.

In addition, due to the overwhelming response so far, additional days have been added to Lanspeary’s schedule to include daytime sessions on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

The new schedule for Lanspeary Lions Rink, effective Monday, February 22, is:

  • Mondays and Tuesdays: Skating sessions at 4:00 p.m., 5:30 p.m., 7:00 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.; and
  • Wednesdays to Sundays: Skating sessions at 8:00 a.m., 9:30 a.m., 11:00 a.m. 12:30 p.m., 2:00 p.m., 4:00 p.m., 5:30 p.m., 7:00 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.

The schedule for Charles Clark Square, effective Monday, February 22 is:

  • Monday to Friday: Skating sessions at 4:00 p.m., 5:30 p.m., 7:00 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.; and
  • Saturdays and Sundays: Skating sessions at 8:00 a.m., 9:30 a.m., 11:00 a.m. 12:30 p.m., 2:00 p.m., 4:00 p.m., 5:30 p.m., 7:00 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.

Registration for Charles Clark Square and the additional days at Lanspeary will open on Saturday, February 20, 12:00 p.m.

Reserved sessions will be one hour in length with 30 minutes in between sessions for staff to groom the ice surface and provide enhanced cleaning prior to the start of the next session.

COVID-19 protocol will be in place, and participants are asked to arrive for their reserved time no more than 10 minutes early. Participants will be required to physically distance and wear a mask or face covering while at the rinks, including while on the ice. Participants are encouraged to download the app to conduct pre-screening prior to arrival to the rinks.

City of Windsor staff will be on site to check skaters in, provide pre-screening and admit them to the ice. Washrooms are available, but no additional facilities are open at this time.

The schedule and conclusion of the season are all dependent on outdoor temperatures and any potential changes to pandemic regulations.
